Lake Travis
In the Highland Lakes of Central Texas
Lake Travis, a reservoir in central Texas, is a key part of the Highland Lakes chain on the Colorado River. It's the fifth lake in the chain, bordered by Lake Austin to the southeast and Lake Marble Falls to the northwest.
As the longest of the six Highland Lakes, Lake Travis stretches over 60 miles through the scenic Texas Hill Country, extending into the outskirts of Austin. Its widest point measures 4.5 miles, and its extensive shoreline spans approximately 270 miles. The lake was created in 1942 with the completion of the Mansfield Dam , built by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) on the western edge of Austin.
The area surrounding Lake Travis is characterized by vast open spaces, alongside a few ranches and four communities. The southern shore, particularly along Highway 620 near Austin, is home to the golf community of Lakeway and the village of Volente.
