Lake Austin
In the Highland Lakes of Central Texas
A beloved Austin landmark, the Percy V. Pennybacker Jr. Bridge is far more famous by its nickname, the "360 Bridge." This stunning through-arch bridge gracefully spans Lake Austin, a constant-level lake on the Colorado River, and is a vital link for the Capital of Texas Highway (Loop 360).
Beyond its function, the bridge is an architectural marvel. It earned first place in the 1984 Federal Highway Administration's design competition and was later named Austin's most innovative architectural example by local engineers. Its distinctive rust-colored steel arches blend beautifully with the natural landscape.
The bridge is a gateway to outdoor recreation. The area is a hub for boaters and is a popular gathering spot on the lake. Lake Austin itself is a picturesque body of water, with high cliffs that provide sheltered areas for boating and are dotted with expensive homes. Anglers can enjoy fishing for largemouth bass, catfish, and sunfish in the well-stocked waters. Lake Austin is part of the chain of Highland Lakes, beginning at the Mansfield Dam and ending at the Tom Miller Dam, both of which generate hydroelectric power.
